At the time of publication, we are immersed in the furore of the football World Cup. So why is our behaviour more extreme at these times?
We’ve all seen the images of fans caught in the delirium of happiness or emotionally broken by defeat. But how strange would this look if we were the only person reacting this way?
The power of emotional contagion
This is the phenomenon of emotional contagion, and it starts at an energetic level. Although not a familiar concept for most people, first and foremost we are energetic beings, and our experience of other people starts with resonance or dissonance.
When we are in tune with those around us, our energy synchronises with others. We connect on the same wavelength, and we give each other permission to behave in a socially expressive way.
Fan behaviour becomes the badge of a community. We are not simply watching the event — we are part of it. We are in it together.
From stadiums to workplaces
It is worth thinking about how this applies in the workplace. Oppressive cultures suppress enthusiasm and creativity, and people may need to dehumanise their experience simply to cope.
Yet we are social beings. We need to feel connected to, and engaged with, those around us.
What culture are you creating?
It may be worth asking whether you have built a culture of celebration and excitement, or one of daily disappointment and defeat.
Sixty years of hurt? Sound familiar?
